MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Andrew Marsh was named the Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week by the Big 12 Conference for the second time this season on Thursday.
In a pair of meets on back-to-back days, Marsh won every race he competed in in WVU’s Senior Night victory over Villanova on Jan. 29. He also posted a pair of top-eight finishes the following day in a quad meet at Ohio State that featured two top-15 teams.
“Andrew has completed a very successful dual meet season,” WVU coach Vic Riggs said. “Being recognized again for his hard work and strong racing is great. He has done everything he needs to do to put himself in a great position for the Big 12 Championship and hopefully NCAAs.”
It is Marsh’s second Big 12 Swimmer of the Week accolade of the season after he was honored on Nov. 5. Senior Max Spencer and sophomore diver Alex Obendorf also have been recognized by the Big 12 Conference in 2015-16.
Marsh helped WVU to a dominating win on Senior Night vs. Villanova on Jan. 29. He won each individual event he raced in, with a 1:40.09 in the 200 freestyle and a 1:49.66 in the 200 backstroke. The backstroke victory was by over eight seconds, while Marsh’s winning margin in the 200 freestyle came by nearly five seconds. He also helped WVU to a win in the 400 medley relay with a 3:22.39. In the 200 freestyle relay, Marsh swam the fastest leadoff time with a 21.05 as WVU placed second.
The following day, at Ohio State and against a pair of top-15 teams, Marsh posted a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a 48.86. He added an eighth-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a 49.60. In relay events, Marsh’s 45.50 to lead off the 400 freestyle relay was the second-fastest opening swim, while his 22.50 to lead off the 200 medley relay was the third-fastest.
The Mountaineers have two weeks off from competition before they compete for a Big 12 title at the 2016 Big 12 Championship, from Feb. 24-27, in Austin, Texas.
