Donning the Old Gold and Blue is something that nearly every kid from West Virginia dreams about, but only a few accomplish. For Charleston native Hannah Shreve, it was a dream come true.
The George Washington High product said that playing for the Mountaineers was something truly special.
“It’s such a great opportunity, especially being from West Virginia. It’s a great honor to wear the gold and blue,” Shreve noted.
In fact, Shreve didn’t have collegiate volleyball on her mind until her junior year of high school.
“I didn’t think playing volleyball in college was something that would be available to me,” Shreve explained.
However, after earning first team all-state in 2011 and 2012, the 2012 West Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year and gaining notoriety from college coaches all around the country, Shreve decided to further her academics and play volleyball at WVU.
The tremendous support of her family has helped her get through the highs and lows that come with a lengthy season. The youngest of three children, Shreve always had the unconditional support from her family. Her step father, Bill, has seen every game that she has played at the WVU Coliseum, while her mother, Diana, has only missed one due to work. Her father, Dan, who is an assistant volleyball coach at George Washington, makes the trip to Morgantown when he is not coaching to see his daughter play.
Even when the Mountaineers are away from Morgantown, Shreve has the older of two brothers, who resides in Texas, cheer her on from the sidelines.
“Iowa State is the only place that I have never had my family come watch me play, so I have had a lot of support from my family throughout my college career,” Shreve said.
This support has helped Shreve amass 198 kills and 193 blocks over her Mountaineer career.
As a sophomore, Shreve bounced back from an injury early in the season which caused her to miss the first month of the 2014 season. She led the Mountaineers with 1.39 blocks per set and ranked third in the Big 12 in blocking. Shreve turned in another solid year during her junior campaign, leading the Mountaineers with ten solo blocks and 94 total blocks. She is quick to credit the help she received from her teammates for her improvement in recent years.
“Luckily, I have been surrounded by great teammates throughout my career,” Shreve said.
Shreve is expected to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, which only took her three years to complete. In the fall, Shreve plans on continuing her education by pursuing a master’s degree in professional accounting, while also playing in her final season wearing a Mountaineer uniform.
