Mountaineers Maintain National Ranking

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team is ranked No. 23 in today’s Road to Regionals National Rankings.
The one-spot drop follows an open weekend for the Mountaineers (2-2, 0-1). Today marks the first time since 2013 WVU has been nationally ranked in consecutive weeks.
The Mountaineers earned their position with a 195.083 season average. The squad also is nationally ranked on each event but balance beam and checks in at No. 15 (48.958 avg.) on vault, No. 23 (48.917 avg.) on floor and No. 24 (48.767 avg.) on bars.
Individually, four Mountaineers own six national rankings. Freshman Kirah Koshinski is the top-ranked gymnast, as she sits at No. 7 on the vault chart with a 9.892 season average, the third-best average in the NCAA.
Junior Alexa Goldberg ranks No. 10 (9.875 avg.) on bars and No. 35 (39.108 avg.) in the all-around, while sophomore Zaakira Muhammad ranks No. 15 (39.325 avg.) in the all-around and No. 33 (9.842 avg.) on vault. Additionally, freshman Carly Galpin ranks No. 35 (9.825 avg.) on beam.
This week’s rankings are based on season average.
Regionally, WVU checks in at No. 4 in the Southeast Region. The squad also ranks No. 3 on vault, No. 4 on floor and No. 5 on bars and beam (48.442 avg.).
Koshinski sits at No. 3 regionally on vault. She also ranks No. 12 (9.808 avg.) on floor and No. 13 (9.783 avg.) on beam.
Five Mountaineers are regionally ranked on floor, with Goldberg leading the pack at No. 8 (9.833 avg.). Freshman Jaquie Tun sits behind Koshinski at No. 15 (9.787 avg.), and Muhammad is tied with senior Melissa Idell at No. 21 (9.758 avg.).
Goldberg also ranks No. 4 on bars, No. 7 in the all-around and No. 23 (9.725 avg.) on beam. Muhammad sits at No. 5 in the all-around, No. 8 on vault, No. 13 (9.808 avg.) on bars and No. 23 (9.725 avg.) on beam.
Senior Jaida Lawrence and sophomore Amanda Bowman round out the team’s vault rankings and check in at No. 11 (9.8 avg.) and No. 17 (9.775 avg.), respectively. Additionally, Galpin ranks No. 5 on beam and freshman Tiara Wright ranks No. 24 (9.733 avg.) on bars.
The Mountaineers continue to sit at No. 3 in the Big 12 Conference. The squad also ranks No. 3 on each event but floor, where the team ranks No. 4.
Koshinski sits alone at the top of the vault chart. She also ranks No. 7 on beam.
Goldberg ranks No. 2 on bars, No. 5 in the all-around and No. 6 on floor, while Muhammad ranks No. 4 in the all-around, No. 9 on vault and No. 10 on bars. Galpin ranks No. 4 on beam.
The Mountaineers embark on a two-meet Big 12 Conference road trip this weekend. The squad opens at Iowa State on Friday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. ET inside Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. The team will then travel to Norman, Oklahoma, and compete at No. 2 Oklahoma on Sunday, Feb. 7, with a 2:45 p.m. ET start inside the Lloyd Noble Center. FOX College Sports Central will carry Sunday’s meet.
