MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball’s Payton Caffrey was named the Midwest Region Freshman of the Year and was awarded a spot on the All-Midwest Region team by American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Tuesday.
Caffrey becomes the first Mountaineer in program history to earn AVCA Regional Freshman of the Year accolades. She is the seventh WVU volleyball player all-time to earn a spot on the all-region team.
“I’m really proud of Payton and what she’s accomplished this year,” WVU coach Reed Sunahara said. “She’s very deserving of this award. Her work ethic sets the tone in our gym, and I look forward to what she can do in the future.”
Caffrey was recently named to the All-Big 12 First Team as well as the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. She was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week on five occasions throughout the season and was named to all-tournament teams at the Penn State Classic, Cal Classic, Capital Classic and WVU Invitational, where she was named the tournament MVP.
An outside hitter from Chuluota, Florida, Caffrey finished the regular season ranked second in the Big 12 in kills per set (4.44) and points per set (4.92) and was fourth in service aces (0.26). She set a new freshman mark for total kills with 515 on the season, ranking third on WVU’s single season kills list. Caffrey, who ended her rookie campaign ranked in the top 25 of the NCAA in kills and points, tallied 12 double-doubles and a team-best 30 aces in 2016.
