Wheeling Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After winning a major decision against No. 6 Virginia Tech on Sunday, Dec. 18, West Virginia University sophomore wrestler Joe Wheeling has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Wheeling stepped into the lineup in mid-November and has gone 2-1 in dual matches for the Mountaineers since then. He rolled to his second straight win on Sunday against Virginia Tech, taking a 13-2 major decision over Virginia Tech’s Brenden Ryan.
The Waterford, Pennsylvania, native hit Brenden Ryan for an early takedown and a 2-0 lead in the first, riding him through the period. Starting on bottom in the second, Wheeling scored a reversal for a 4-0 lead, adding points for locked hands and stalling on Ryan to bump his lead to 6-0. The two went to their feet for the start of the third, with Wheeling adding a trio of takedowns as well as the point for riding time in taking a 13-2 major decision.
This Week in Women’s Basketball: No. 14 West Virginia concludes the 2016-17 nonconference slate with Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday, Dec. 21 … Wednesday’s game is Feed A Family Night and Family Night … all fans who donate a canned good item will receive free admission to a future game … fans can also purchase a Family Night package for $25, which includes four tickets and a $15 concession voucher … following Wednesday’s contest, the Mountaineers take an eight day hiatus before opening Big 12 action at TCU on Dec. 29 in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia rolled to a 107-40 win over Longwood on Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, West Virginia … Tynice Martin led the team with 21 points while dishing out a career-high seven assists … Alexis Brewer notched a career-high 16 points … Teana Muldrow and Lanay Montgomery combined for a perfect 16-of-16 from the field … Montgomery tallied 19 points, while Muldrow finished with 17 … Kristina King rounded out WVU’s double-figure scoring leaders with 11 points … Desiree Rhodes led the team with nine rebounds, while Katrina Pardee had a career-high 10 assists in the win.
Notes: West Virginia’s 32 assists against Longwood tied for the second-most in a single-game … the Mountaineers’ 71.4 field goal percentage in the first half was a season high … WVU held Longwood to eight points in the first quarter and six in the fourth quarter, marking 16 times this season that a WVU opponent was held under double-figure scoring in a quarter … WVU limited Longwood to 23.5 percent shooting … Longwood became the 12th consecutive opponent since March 20, 2016, to be held to less than 40 percent shooting … West Virginia is 11-0 and off to its second best start in program history … the school record 16-0 start happened in the 2010-11 campaign … as of games through Dec. 17, West Virginia is first nationally in field goal percentage defense (28.3%), second in scoring defense (48.6 ppg), second in blocked shots per game (7.4), third in scoring margin (+33.8), seventh in rebound margin (+13.4) and ninth in field goal percentage (48.9%).

Notes: The Mountaineers drew a crowd of 2,822 at Parkersburg High in Parkersburg, West Virginia … Joe Wheeling, who stepped into the lineup in mid-November, recorded his second straight dual match win … he is now 2-1 in duals this season … the featured bout of the day was between nationally ranked West Virginia natives, No. 7 Jacob Smith (WVU) of Charleston and No. 3 Jared Haught (Tech) of Parkersburg … Haught won a 3-2 decision in overtime in the third meeting between the two… two of the three matches have gone to overtime.
