West Virginia (6-0) is off to its best start since opening the 2010-11 season at 16-0. The Mountaineers knocked off Auburn, 56-52, on Thursday to clinch the Savannah Invitational Championship. Tynice Martin paced the team with 16 points, while Lanay Montgomery chipped in 13. Teana Muldrow matched a career-best with 14 rebounds and added eight points.
Martin was named the Savannah Invitational MVP after pacing the Mountaineers with 20.0 points, 3.3 rebound and 2.0 assists in three games. Muldrow picked up All-Tournament Team honors after averaging a double-double with 14.7 points and 11.0 rebounds.
“I thought we did some real good things,” said coach Mike Carey, who will coach his 500th game at WVU on Sunday. “It served a purpose. I see what we really need to work on, which makes it good. I saw a lot of heart down there, especially in that last game against Auburn.”
Through six games, Martin leads the team and ranks second in the Big 12 with 20.5 points per game. Muldrow follows with 13.8 points per contest. Newcomer Kristina King is nearly in double-digits, tallying 9.5 points per game. Muldrow paces the Mountaineers with 9.2 rebounds per contest. Lanay Montgomery is averaging 8.7 points and 8.8 rebounds, while leading the Big 12 with 2.7 blocks per game. Chania Ray continues to lead the Big 12 with 6.3 assists per contest.
Dating back to last year’s NCAA Tournament game against Ohio State, West Virginia has held its last seven opponents to less than 40 percent shooting. Three opponents (Charleston Southern – 17.7%, Coppin State – 22.6% and Auburn – 27.6%) were held to less than 30 percent shooting. WVU’s field goal percentage defense is second nationally. WVU is eighth in scoring margin (+29.7) and ninth in scoring defense (48.2 points per game allowed). Since the 2013-14 season, West Virginia has won 27 consecutive games at the WVU Coliseum against nonconference opponents.
The Mountaineers and High Point (1-3) meet for the second time on Sunday. West Virginia rolled to an 89-57 win in the previous matchup on Dec. 4, 2010.
High Point has lost two straight games – a 73-62 defeat at Ole Miss and a 75-66 loss at UAB. The Panthers’ lone win came against Brevard College in an 89-42 victory. DeUnna Hendrix’s team is averaging 66.2 points per game and giving up 66.5 points per contest. The Panthers are shooting at a 44.4 percent (99-of-223) clip and holding their opposition to 39.8 percent (98-of-246).
Bre Davis is pacing HPU with 15.0 points per game, while Preseason All-Big South First Team honoree Kaylah Keys is second on the squad with 13.5 points per contest. Shea Morgan leads High Point with an average of 6.5 rebounds per game.
“They have some good guards, good post players and can score some,” said Carey about the Panthers. “They are going to backdoor and dribble penetrate. Defensively, they are going to play some man, pressure us a bit and play a little bit of zone. We’ll have to be prepared for whatever they do.”
Following Sunday’s contest, No. 19/23 West Virginia continues its four-game homestand on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in a 6:30 p.m. tilt with Morehead State. All youth in eighth grade or lower, who wear a youth team jersey, will receive free admission.
