MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 21/25-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team concludes its three-game homestand with Coppin State on Saturday, Nov. 19, in a 1 p.m. tipoff at the WVU Coliseum.
Admission to Saturday’s contest is free courtesy of WVU Medicine. The first 750 fans in attendance will receive a free Beat Oklahoma T-shirt. Parking at the WVU Coliseum is open and free, excluding the reserved Black RV lot nearest the WVU Arboretum.
Dan Zangrilli and Meg Bulger will have the radio call on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Fans can listen to the broadcast on various affiliates across the state (click here for the list), WVUsports.com and the WVU Gameday app. A live video stream will also be provided at WVUsports.com.
West Virginia (2-0) picked up its 26th consecutive win against nonconference opponents at the WVU Coliseum with a 95-49 victory over Howard on Tuesday. The Mountaineers shot over 60 percent in the second half and had five players reach double-figure scoring. Tynice Martin and Chania Ray notched career-highs with 27 and 17 points, respectively.
The Mountaineers limited CSU to 32.0 percent shooting (16-of-50) and has held its last three opponents below the 40-percent shooting plateau. WVU is averaging 91.5 points per game and shooting 48.5 percent (63-of-130) from the field.
Martin paces the Mountaineers with 22.0 points per game. After grabbing another 13 rebounds against Howard, Montgomery leads the NCAA with 15.5 rebounds per game. Ray is also the Big 12 Conference’s top assist leader, averaging 8.0 per game.
WVU and Coppin State (0-3) meet for the ninth time since 1999. WVU collected a 96-64 win over the Eagles on Nov. 16, 2015. Coppin State wraps up its four-game road trip on Saturday. The Eagles dropped games at VCU (73-44), Virginia (103-40) and George Washington (77-46).
“They’re athletic. They’ve got girls that will drive the ball and that type of stuff, which is good,” coach Mike Carey said. “We need to work our defense, getting weak side, stop penetration, pick up the ball early and box out. When you’re not an aggressive team, you usually don’t box out well. That’s what is occurring right now. We are not boxing out well. When we go against a real aggressive team, we’re going to get hurt on the boards. Those are things I am looking at, coming into this game.”
Keena Samuels leads CSU with 11.7 points per game and freshman Chance Graham paces the Eagles with 8.7 rebounds per contest. Coppin State is shooting just 25.7 percent (45-of-175) from the field and 9.8 percent (4-of-41) from behind the three-point line.
After Saturday’s contest, West Virginia treks to Savannah, Georgia, for the Savannah Invitational from Nov. 22-24. The Mountaineers will play North Carolina A&T (Nov. 22), East Carolina (Nov. 23) and Auburn (Nov. 24).
