Mountaineers Open Cary Gym for Fall Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will hold its annual Fall Classic intrasquad on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 4:30 p.m., at Cary Gym.
Fans are invited to attend the intrasquad inside the team’s training facility. Admission is free.
One of the team’s final preparations prior to its regular-season opener, the Fall Classic simulates a formal meet, as the Mountaineers will split into two teams and the gymnasts will compete their full routines in front of judges and fans.
“The Fall Classic is a great chance for our underclassmen to compete under pressure before we open the regular season,” Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. “Everyone is fighting for a lineup position right now, and all the gymnasts are pushing to be on our top-10 lists. Tomorrow will be the first time many of these new, exciting routines will be competed in front of an audience, and we’re looking to build confidence in these routines.”
Led by seniors Brooklyn Doggette and Alexa Goldberg, 10 Mountaineers return from a 2016 squad which posted an 11-8 record and finished in fifth place at the 2016 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional Championship and in third place at the Big 12 Gymnastics Championship. They will be joined by five freshmen this year: Chloe Cluchey, Kassidy Cumber, Erica Fontaine, Abby Kaufman and Julia Merwin.
“The freshmen have done an incredible job throughout fall training,” Butts added. “Tomorrow is our fans’ first chance to see our new floor routines, too, which feature the best choreography we’ve ever competed, thanks to assistant coach Kaylyn Millick. We’re looking forward to having a nice crowd on hand tomorrow to help us continue our preparation for the 2017 season.”
WVU opens the 2017 season at Maryland on Jan. 8, at 1 p.m., at the XFINITY Center in College Park, Maryland.
