West Virginia Women’s Hoops No. 22 in AP Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s basketball team was tabbed No. 22 in the Associated Press Top 25 Preseason Poll released on Tuesday.
 
Last week, West Virginia was ranked No. 25 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Preseason Poll.
 
West Virginia finished the 2015-16 season with a 25-10 overall record and a 12-6 third-place finish in the Big 12. The Mountaineers advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time overall and reached the NCAA Second Round for the ninth time. WVU finished ranked No. 23 in the Associated Press and No. 25 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Top 25 polls last season.
 
The Mountaineers were picked fourth in the Big 12 Conference coaches preseason poll released earlier in the month. This marks the fourth time West Virginia has ranked in both the AP and USA TODAY Sports preseason polls: 2016-17 (22 AP/25 Coaches), 2014-15 (17 AP/17 Coaches), 2010-11 (11 AP/11 Coaches) and 2007-08 (18 AP/20 Coaches).
 
WVU earned 154 points for the No. 22 ranking. Other Big 12 teams in the Top 25 poll are No. 2 Baylor (789), No. 8 Texas (604) and No. 16 Oklahoma (285).
 
Lanay Montgomery, who was named Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, returns for her senior season after averaging 8.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. Tynice Martin, the 2016 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, returns for WVU after averaging 10.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Martin was also tabbed Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Teana Muldrow is the Mountaineers leading returning scorer, after tallying 10.6 points per game last season. Newcomer Kristina King was named the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year after averaging 19.1 points and 8.8 rebounds for National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Champion Gulf Coast State.
 
West Virginia plays Concord tonight in a 7 p.m. exhibition game at Robert C. Byrd High School in Clarksburg, West Virginia. The No. 22/25-ranked Mountaineers open the regular season against Charleston Southern on Saturday, Nov. 12, in a 4 p.m. tipoff against the Buccaneers.
