MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University sophomore Ginny Thrasher claimed Bronze in the women’s 10m air rifle today at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Final for Rifle/Pistol, at the Tiro a Segno Nazionale Shooting Range in Bologna, Italy.
Today’s showing is the first career World Cup medal for the Springfield, Virginia, native. She earned her invitation to the final with her Gold Medal performance in the same event at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games.
“Today was an excellent opportunity to have a high-level competition after the Olympic Games,” Thrasher said. “I executed my process really well, and this was a great way for me to get ready for the college season. This has been a fun trip and another great experience shooting against the best in the world.”
After shooting a 9 on her first shot of the day, Thrasher strung together 39 straight 10s and advanced to the final in second place with a 419.9 score. She finished with a 185.5 total in the final.
Serbia’s Andrea Arsovic finished first with a 209.0 final score. China’s Siling Yi placed second with a 208.7 total.
“I’m really proud of Ginny’s performance today,” WVU coach Jon Hammond, who accompanied Thrasher to Italy, said. “She shot an excellent match and showed great determination and poise following a 9 on her first shot with 39 straight 10s. She had to battle in the final, but to come away with a medal at the World Cup Final is excellent and more reward for all her hard work this year.”
Thrasher will not compete in any additional events at the championship.
Upon return to Morgantown, Thrasher and her teammates will travel to NC State on Oct. 15 for their first Great American Rifle Conference match of the season. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m.
