MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving team officially opens the 2016-17 season at the West Virginia State Games in Huntington, from October 7-8.
On Friday, races start at 4 p.m. ET with the women’s 200 freestyle relay. Saturday will be broken up into two sessions, the first starting at 9 a.m. with the women’s 200 medley relay and the second at 3 p.m. with the women’s 1,650 freestyle.
Eight teams will participate in the sixth annual WV State Games at Marshall's Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium - Wheeling Jesuit, West Virginia Wesleyan, West Virginia Institute of Technology, Fairmont State, Salem International, Davis & Elkins College, Alderson Broaddus University and WVU.
Both the WVU men’s and women’s squads have claimed victory at the West Virginia State Games in each of the past five seasons.
WVU and Marshall are the only two NCAA Division I schools in the state, and the teams switch each year to host the event.
Last weekend, the Mountaineers held the fourth annual Gold-Blue Intrasquad meet, at the WVU Natatorium. The gold team defeated the blue squad for the second year in a row.
Next up, West Virginia returns home to the WVU Natatorium to host the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend on Friday, October 14, at 6 p.m., and Saturday, October 15, at 10 a.m. The Mountaineer men and women will compete against Seton Hall and Xavier, while the women will also face Butler.
