MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team will wrap up a four-match homestand this weekend when the Mountaineers host Oklahoma in back-to-back contests on Friday and Saturday. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside the WVU Coliseum.
Friday marks the Mountaineers’ annual Dig Pink match for breast cancer awareness. West Virginia will don pink jerseys in support of the cause. WVU Medicine will be sponsoring the match and collecting donations to the WVU Cancer Institute. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match and can get the WVU sports official “pink” t-shirt with a donation of $10 or more to WVU Medicine. Prior to the match, the team will honor Laurie Roe and the memory of Javier Restrepo. Laurie, the mother of senior setter Haley Roe, is a survivor of stage four breast cancer. The son of OU head coach Santiago Restrepo, Javier lost his battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age four in 2009.
Admission for all WVU home matches this year is free to the public. There are no permanent restrooms or concession stands inside the WVU Coliseum. Temporary restrooms are available outside the Blue Gate, while Sodexo is providing temporary food carts.
WVU (10-7, 2-2) is 0-9 all-time against OU (9-7, 0-3) and is coming off a five-set loss to Iowa State on Friday. The Mountaineers doubled their 2015 win total last Wednesday with a 3-2 triumph of TCU, marking their 10th win of the season and their second Big 12 victory in 2016. The Sooners enter the match after losing six straight, including three consecutive Big 12 matches.
“I think we did okay against Iowa State,” said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. “Offensively, we were much better than defensively. If we can score points from a defensive end, we’re going to be that much better. It’s going to take some pressure off our offense. Oklahoma is a good team. They’ve got a lot of weapons; a lot of returners. We’re just trying to slow them down.”
The Mountaineers will play the Sooners in back-to-back matches in Morgantown this year instead of the traditional home-and-away series. Oklahoma was unable to travel to West Virginia last season, forcing WVU to play consecutive matches at OU last November. The Sooners are returning the favor this season.
Friday’s match against Iowa State marked the fifth time this season and the second straight match that has gone to five sets for WVU. The Mountaineers are 3-2 in five-set contests, with wins over Indiana State (Sept. 2), Morehead State (Sept. 3) and TCU (Sept. 28). They’ve fallen in five to Marshall (Sept. 2) and Iowa State (Sept. 30).
