MORGANTOWN, W.VA. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving team travels to Blacksburg, Virginia, to compete in a quad meet against Virginia Tech, Duke and William & Mary, from October 21-22 at Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
The Hokies host the two-day event with Friday’s meet starting at 5 p.m. ET and Saturday’s races beginning at 11 a.m. ET. Live stats can be found on the swimming and diving schedule page on WVUsports.com. Fans can also follow the meet live by downloading Meet Mobile to their phones.
“With this being our third meet in a row, managing our swims will be very important,” said coach Vic Riggs. “The teams took a good step forward last weekend, and we're looking to do the same this week on the road against some very good competition.”
After two strong weekends to open the 2016-17 season WVU swept the Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors on Wednesday. It marks the first time in WVU history that the Mountaineers earned all four Big 12 Weekly awards. Senior Emma Skelley was named the Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Merwane El Merini was the Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week. For the divers, junior Michael Proietto earned Big 12 Men’s Diver of the Week accolades, while sophomore Julia Calcut earned the women’s diver of the week honor.
Skelley and El Merini also were named Big 12 Swimmers-of-the-Week by CollegeSwimming News, on Tuesday. The Mountaineer men (2-0) rank No. 35 in this week’s Collegeswimming.com’s team rankings and the women (3-0) rank No. 41.
West Virginia is coming off a dominant and record-setting weekend, as the WVU men and women dominated over Seton Hall, Xavier and Butler on October 14-15, claiming the Big 12 vs. Big East title for the second consecutive year. The highlight of the two-day event was Skelley’s WVU Natatorium record in the 1,650 freestyle. Skelley swam a 16:56. 11, besting Rachael Burnett's previous record of 16:59.32. The Mountaineers won 31 out of 40 events over the course of two days, including a diving sweep. The women won 17 of 20 events and the men won 14 of 20.
On springboard, six Mountaineer divers qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships, four from men’s team and two from the women. The men swept the top four finishes on both 1-meter and 3-meter and the women claimed one-two finishes on both 1- and 3-meter.
WVU has a month off before competing at the three-day N.C. State Invitational in Greensboro, North Carolina, on November 17-19.
