MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second straight week and the fifth time this season, West Virginia outside hitter Payton Caffrey has been named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week for matches played as announced by the league on Monday.
Caffrey’s fifth Freshman of the Week accolade is one shy of the single-season record of six.
A native of Chuluota, Florida, Caffrey led all Big 12 freshman last week with 4.86 kills per set and 5.21 points per set. Her numbers put her second and third, respectively, amongst all league players for the week.
Caffrey led West Virginia in both matches, registering 17 kills in a 3-0 win at Robert Morris and a 3-1 loss to Baylor on Saturday, tying her for fourth-most on the week. She recorded eight digs against the Bears for an average of 1.57 digs per set. Caffrey totaled 34 kills, three block assists and a service ace on the week.
“We’re very happy for Payton,” said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. “Her accolades are a testament to her work ethic and leadership on the court. She continues to get better and better every day for us, and has done a lot of nice things for us this season. Her future looks bright.”
Caffrey’s 386 kills this season are third-most by a WVU freshman. Currently averaging 4.89 kills per set, she is on pace to shatter the freshman record of 4.01 kills per set posted by Stephanie Zolna back in 2002. Megan Porter holds the freshman record for total kills with 401 set in 1996.
