No. 1 Mountaineers Open GARC Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1 West Virginia University rifle team will travel to Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) foe No. 13 NC State on Saturday, Oct. 15, for its first away match of the season.

The Mountaineers will shoot smallbore and air rifle inside Reynolds Coliseum on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

WVU (1-0) returns to competition following a two-week break. The seven-time reigning GARC champion Mountaineers opened their 2016-17 season defeating then- No. 5 Ohio State, 4714-4674, on Oct. 2.

“I think it’s going to be a great experience to shoot smallbore and air rifle in the arena Saturday,” Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. “This set-up will be very similar to the NCAA and GARC Championships, and the experience is valuable at this stage of the season. This will be a new facility for everyone on the team, and that offers a good challenge. We’re looking forward to this weekend.”

The Mountaineers are 17-0 all-time against NC State. WVU defeated the Wolf Pack last season, 4719-4654, in Morgantown.

“Everyone has continued to work on their individual techniques and training in the range since our opener. We have a lot of shooters with different levels of experience, and each shooter worked on what he or she needed to work on,” Hammond said.

Two 2016 USA Olympic Team members will compete against each other in the match Saturday. Gold Medalist Ginny Thrasher will represent WVU, while Lucas Kozeniesky will shoot for NC State.

Against the Buckeyes, Thrasher paced WVU with winning scores of 594 in smallbore and 595 in air rifle. Coming in second in the smallbore discipline, senior captain Jean-Pierre Lucas shot a 588, while junior Elizabeth Gratz followed Thrasher with a 592 in air rifle.

NC State opens its season against the Mountaineers this Saturday.
