MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving team hosts the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend at the WVU Natatorium from October 13-14. This marks WVU’s first regular season home meet of the year.
On Friday, races will begin at 6 p.m., ET. Competition commences at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the WVU Natatorium. The Mountaineer men and women will compete against Seton Hall and Xavier on both days, while the women will also face Butler.
Admission is free for all fans. Parking is available in the lots surrounding the WVU Coliseum. Fans can follow @WVUSwimDive on Twitter for updated results and content.
“Having Butler, Seton Hall and Xavier back for the second year in a row gives us great competition at home, coming off traveling last weekend and before we travel next weekend,” said coach Vic Riggs. “We are having a very strong week of practice, and I look for that to translate to our racing this weekend. Both our men’s and women’s teams are young and we are working hard on learning how to train and race. We will look to improve upon our performances from last week and continue to challenge the teams to race smart, with good technique and doing the little things better than last week.”
In last year’s Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend, West Virginia dominated en route to a first-place finish by both the men’s and women’s teams. Against Seton Hall, Xavier and Butler, WVU totaled victories in 38 of 40 events.
The Mountaineers opened the 2016-17 season at the West Virginia State Games in Huntington, on October 7-8. The men’s team led the two-day event in dominating fashion, with a victory against seven in-state foes, while the women finished in second place.
WVU’s men’s team won 19 out of 20 events to claim its sixth consecutive West Virginia State Games title. The Mountaineers won with 1,696.50 points, while West Virginia Tech came in second with 480 points. The Mountaineer women won six events, including four on Saturday, to place second overall with 986 points. Marshall won with 1,660 points.
With a quick turnaround ahead, the Mountaineers travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, to compete against Virginia Tech, Duke and William & Mary, from October 21-22. The Hokies will host the two-day event with Friday’s meet starting at 5 p.m. and Saturday’s races beginning at 11 a.m.
