MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Eight student-athletes from the West Virginia University gymnastics team were named Scholastic All-Americans for the 2015-16 academic year, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W).
The eight accolades are the most for the program since collecting 10 awards in 2011. Mountaineer gymnasts have earned 120 honors since 1987.
“I’m very proud of this team’s accomplishments in the classroom over the last year,” Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. “We had one of our highest GPAs in program history, and we will continue to raise the bar. It’s not easy being a student-athlete, and these awards speak to the dedication and hard work each of these gymnasts puts in every day while working toward a great education at WVU.”
Graduate Jaida Lawrence (speech pathology and audiology) capped her four-year career with her fourth honor. She was one of 97 gymnasts to earn the award with a 4.00 grade point average (GPA).
Five Mountaineers earned their first career awards: graduate Melissa Idell (elementary education), senior Brooklyn Doggette (child development and family studies), junior Robyn Bernard (exercise physiology), and sophomores Kirah Koshinski (communication studies) and Jaquie Tun (graphic design).
Additionally, student assistant Mackenzie Myers (criminology) earned her third career honor, while former gymnast Rachel Sine (exercise physiology) pushed her career award total to two.
Scholastic All-America status is awarded as a result of GPAs of 3.5 or better for the year. In total, 633 gymnasts were honored for the 2015-16 academic year.
The NACGC/W is the national association for women’s collegiate gymnastics coaches. The association seeks to actively manage and develop the sport of women’s gymnastics at the collegiate level and works with the NCAA and USA Gymnastics in order to provide the best possible experience for student-athletes.
