MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the fourth time this season, West Virginia University volleyball’s Payton Caffrey has garnered league honors as she was announced as the Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Monday for matches played Oct. 5-8.
The freshman outside hitter led the Mountaineers in a pair of outings against Oklahoma, averaging 4.29 kills per set to rank fourth among all Big 12 players for the week. Caffrey was fifth in points at 4.64 per set.
After just missing a double-double with 12 kills and nine digs on Friday, Caffrey registered No. 9 of the season with a team-high 18 kills and 12 digs in a 3-1 loss to the Sooners on Saturday. She finished the weekend with 30 kills and 21 digs.
A native of Chuluota, Florida, Caffrey is the first WVU player to win more than three weekly awards in a season. She is the ninth rookie to earn the accolade four or more times in the same season since the award was added back in 2008.
“Payton has continued to improve since the start of preseason in August,” said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. “Her work ethic sets the standard for our team. She’s very deserving of this award,”
West Virginia (10-9, 2-4) will travel to Moon Township, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday to wrap up nonconference play in a 6 p.m. match at Robert Morris.
