MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With the 2016 West Virginia University gymnastics season opener just days away, the WVU Athletic Department has announced many exciting promotions for the Mountaineers’ home season at the WVU Coliseum.
“Gymnastic meets at the WVU Coliseum are exciting events, and I think the promotions we have planned for the 2016 season will add to our fans’ overall experience,” fifth-year coach Jason Butts said. “Each of our five meets will offer unique and exciting incentive for our fans – from Beauty and the Beast to Dollar Days to the Pink Meet, we really believe that everyone who comes to our competitions will leave having enjoyed themselves.”
Following the team’s season opener at No. 16 Denver on Jan. 9, the squad will open its home slate against New Hampshire on Sunday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m. The opener marks the return of the exciting Beauty and the Beast Meet, and the gymnastics team will compete simultaneously with the WVU wrestling team. The opener also is “Poster Day,” and the 2016 gymnastics schedule poster will be available for all fans to pick up. Additionally, Mr. Twister will be in attendance to make balloon creations and offer face painting.
The first of two “Dollar Days” is scheduled for WVU’s tri-meet against Western Michigan and William & Mary, on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. All tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas will be available for $1 each. The promotion also will run for the team’s home season finale against Pitt on Friday, March 11, at 7 p.m.
WVU will hold the fourth-annual “Wendy M. Roach Invitational” on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m., against Kentucky. The invitational, named after former WVU gymnast Nicole Roach’s mother, is a “Pink Meet” to promote breast cancer awareness. All fans are encouraged to wear pink that afternoon, and the team will accept sundry item donations, such as scarves, nail polish, books, body lotion and socks, for donation to Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. The first 500 fans in attendance that afternoon will receive a pink rally towel, courtesy of WVU Medicine. Additionally, Mr. Twister also will be in attendance.
Mr. Twister will appear at three gymnastics meets this season.
Mr. Twister will make his final appearance of the season on Sunday, March 6, when WVU plays host to Ohio State and Bowling Green at 2 p.m.
“Senior Night” is scheduled for the team’s home season finale against Pitt on March 11, and the Mountaineers will honor the squad’s three seniors – Melissa Idell, Jaida Lawrence and Audrey Tolbert – following the competition.
The Mountaineers will be available to meet with fans and sign autographs at “Chalk Talk” after every home meet this year.
The Mountaineer Ticket Office continues to offer a Varsity Sports Flex Plan, a bargain for families who plan on attending a WVU varsity sporting event. Flex plan packages are available for just $20. A package provides 10 vouchers redeemable for single-game tickets to gymnastics, wrestling and baseball. To order, visit WVUGAME.com, call 1-800-WVU-GAME or stop by the Mountaineer Ticket Office in the WVU Coliseum.
Fans also can now purchase tickets online in advance for any home match by visiting WVUGAME.com and selecting the Print-At-Home or Mobile Delivery options.
The Mountaineers officially open their 2016 season at No. 16 Denver, with No. 24 Southern Utah, on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. ET, inside Hamilton Gymnasium in Denver, Colorado. The meet also marks the team’s Big 12 Conference opener, as the Pioneers joined the league as an affiliate member during the offseason.
