MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team sits at No. 1 in this week’s College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll.
Today’s rankings are based on the three highest qualifier scores shot at different locations.
Murray State remains at No. 2, while Kentucky and TCU are tied at No. 3. Alaska-Fairbanks checks in at No. 5, followed by Air Force at the No. 6 spot.
Ohio State sits at No. 7, with Nebraska, Memphis and N.C. State rounding out the top 10.
Most recently, West Virginia (9-0, 5-0 GARC) displayed two record-setting performances against No. 5 Alaska-Fairbanks (Jan. 12) and then-ranked No. 15 Akron (Jan. 17) at the WVU Rifle Range. The Mountaineers set an NCAA record with an aggregate score of 4724 to beat the Nanooks, 4724-4697. West Virginia then shot 16 points better in its 4740-4621 victory over Great American Rifle Conference foe Akron, breaking the NCAA record for the second time in five days.
Up next, West Virginia competes against No. 10-ranked N.C. State on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the WVU Rifle Range and the WVU Indoor Track inside the Shell Building. The squad will hold its smallbore competition at the range at 8 a.m. and move to the track for an air rifle match, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. A free youth clinic will be held at the track immediately following the competition.
