Big 12 Honors Koshinski Again
January 19, 2016 04:58 PM | Gymnastics
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University freshman gymnast Kirah Koshinski was honored by the Big 12 Conference today, as she was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the second time in as many weeks.
Koshinski is the first Mountaineer gymnast to earn Big 12 weekly honors in back-to-back weeks since Hope Sloanhoffer was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 28, 2014, and Feb. 4, 2014. She is the second WVU gymnast to score two career Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors, as senior Jaida Lawrence also was honored twice in 2013.
A native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, Koshinski put forth a strong effort in her WVU Coliseum debut on Jan. 17, setting a career best on vault and matching her beam career high in the Mountaineers’ 195.8-195.225 win over then-No. 18 New Hampshire. She paced WVU on vault and beam for the second straight week and earned the vault win, her second in as many meets, with a career-high 9.9. Koshinski also finished fifth on beam with a 9.8 mark and tallied 9.725 on floor, good enough for seventh place.
Boasting a 9.887 season average, Koshinski ranks No. 6 nationally, No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference, on vault. She also ranks No. 7 in the conference on beam (9.8 avg.) and No. 16 on floor (9.775 avg.).
The Mountaineers stay in Morgantown and return to the Coliseum on Sunday, Jan. 24, for a tri-meet against Western Michigan and William & Mary at 2 p.m. It’s “Dollar Day,” and all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas will be available for $1 each.
