Koshinski Earns Big 12 Newcomer Honor
January 12, 2016 04:49 PM | Gymnastics
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a strong showing in her collegiate debut, West Virginia University freshman gymnast Kirah Koshinski has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
A native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, Koshinski paced the Mountaineers (0-2, 0-1) on three events in the team’s third place, 193.65 showing at No. 16 Denver on Jan. 9, winning vault outright with a 9.875 mark and finishing third on floor exercise (9.825) and balance beam (9.8).
“Kirah did exactly what I expected her to do at Denver,” Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. “She’s so calm and collected during training, and that came through during the meet. I’m very happy her efforts were recognized by the Big 12 Conference today.”
Koshinski is the first Mountaineer gymnast to collect a Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honor since 2014. After one week of competition, she ranks No. 13 nationally, No. 1 in the Big 12, on vault. She also ranks No. 6 in the conference on beam and floor.
The Mountaineers open their 2016 home season at the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Jan. 17, against No. 18 New Hampshire, at 4 p.m. It’s a Beauty and the Beast meet, and the gymnastics team will compete simultaneously with the WVU wrestling team. The opener is “Poster Day,” and the 2016 gymnastics schedule poster will be available for all fans to pick up. Additionally, Mr. Twister will be in attendance to make balloon creations and offer face painting.
Tickets are available now at WVUGAME.com. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for youths and senior citizens, and $2 for groups of 10 or more. Students are admitted for free with a valid WVU student I.D.
