MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University golf team finished 34 over par for a top-10 finish at the Tiger Turning Stone Intercollegiate, hosted by Missouri at the Kuluhyat Course at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York, on Monday. The event marked the Mountaineers’ first varsity outing since 1982.
West Virginia dropped from a tie for seventh to finish 10th out of 15 teams, carding a team score of 300-294-304=898. Host Missouri took home the trophy, shooting an 862 (-2), followed by Cleveland State in second at 872 (+4). Individually, two Mountaineers finished in the top-25 as freshman Max Sear tied for 16th and junior Alan Cooke tied for 23rd place in the 87-player field.
“Alan played well today, but the overall we had some struggles,” said WVU coach Sean Covich. “We are very disappointed in our finish but at the same time, this was our first event in over 30 years. For three of our guys, it was their first NCAA Division I event. We will learn from this experience and be ready for Marshall next week.”
Sear, who entered the day T-8th at one under, was five over par with a 77 in the third and final round. He finished with a score of 70-73-77=220 to tie for 16th place at four over par.
