INDIANAPOLIS – Bridgett Talia had 10 kills and Dzeni Hadzisehovic hit .583 as the West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to Eastern Michigan on the first day of the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational on Friday afternoon. EMU (2-2) took the match in set scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-20.
West Virginia (1-3) hit .122 as a team but posted a season-best 8.0 team blocks. Hadzisehovic had a career-best seven kills, while Caleah Wells had nine kills and hit .214 with a pair of blocks. Morgan Montgomery chipped in eight kills as Brittany Sample put 35 assists on the scoresheet.
Hannah Shreve registered a team-best six blocks and tied with Talia for a team-best three aces. Swanegan had four blocks to go with a trio of kills, while Montgomery came up with a pair of blocks as well. Gianna Gotterba led the way with 12 digs, and Haley Roe added eight for the Mountaineers.
Eastern Michigan hit .291 behind Stacey Perinar’s 20 kills and had 10.0 team blocks.
The Mountaineers had eight errors on the way to a .061 attacking percentage in the first set. However, they found a few bright spots in Montgomery, who had five kills, and Wells, who was perfect hitting for three kills. The two teamed to give WVU a 6-4 lead, but a Mountaineer miscue later allowed EMU to tie the set at 12-12. Four in a row by the Eagles put them ahead 19-16 on a block. Wells came up with a kill and a block to extend the set with EMU serving set-point, but the Eagles came through with a kill for the 25-20 win.
West Virginia bounced back in set two, hitting .214 as a team behind four kills from Talia. Despite Eastern Michigan taking the first two points, an ace and a kill by Talia helped WVU to a 5-3. She later repeated her feat, pushing the Mountaineers to an 18-11 advantage after a kill by Montgomery. A setter dump by Sample made it 20-14 for WVU, and Talia found the court once again to make it 23-17. The Mountaineers were able to withstand a late EMU rally, as the Eagles took six straight to knot the score, 23-23. A ball handling error on Eastern Michigan made it set-point for the Mountaineers, and a kill from Talia capped the stanza with a 25-23 win for WVU to tie the match 1-1.
However, WVU’s offensively struggles returned in set three as they produced seven kills and seven errors. EMU rattled off three early points for a 7-2 lead before a 5-0 run increased the Eagles advantage to 10 at 16-6. The Mountaineers couldn’t find an offensive rhythm, despite kills from Hadzisehovic and Wells, and dropped the set, 25-13, as EMU took a 2-1 lead.
Hadzisehovic hit .667 with six kills in the fourth set, but it wasn’t enough to spark the WVU offense. An early 4-0 run put Eastern Michigan in front 10-5, though a pair of Talia kills kept the Mountaineers close. Shreve recorded an ace before Hadzisehovic put one through the pins to knot the score, 17-17. An EMU attack went out of bounds to push the Mountaineers in front, 18-17, though the Eagles came back with a kill. EMU then used a pair of blocks on a 6-0 run to take the set, 25-20 and win the match 3-1.
West Virginia returns to the court on Saturday when they face Charlotte at 10 a.m. at The Jungle. The team will take on host IUPUI at 6:30 p.m. that evening.
