Mountaineers Set for ISSF Gabala World Cup

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team will have several representatives at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Gabala Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun World Cup, in Gabala, Azerbaijan.
Rifle events are scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 10, with the men’s 10m air rifle. Rifle events will conclude on Friday, Aug. 14, with the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions final.
The Gabala World Cup is the final chance for athletes to secure qualification points for the ISSF World Cup Finals, set for Sept. 1-7, in Munich, Germany. Additionally, 34 Olympic quotas will be awarded at the Gabala World Cup.
Seniors Meelis Kiisk (Estonia) and Patrick Sunderman (United States), as well as incoming freshman Virginia Thrasher (United States), will compete alongside recent WVU graduate Ziva Dvorsak (Slovenia) and coach Jon Hammond (Great Britain).
Kiisk, Dvorsak and Hammond recently competed at the 2015 European Shooting Championships, in Maribor, Slovenia. Thrasher and Sunderman last competed at the 2015 USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle/Pistol in Fort Benning, Georgia, in late June.
