MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Six from the West Virginia University gymnastics team were named Scholastic All-Americans for the 2014-15 academic year, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W).
WVU gymnasts have earned 112 honors since 1987.
“I’m proud of this program’s academic accomplishments last year, and these awards are a great representation of the hard work the gymnasts give each day,” said coach Jason Butts. “Academics are a key focus for our student-athletes, and we will continue to strive for success in the classroom to the highest quality.”
Senior Jaida Lawrence (speech pathology and audiology) earned her third career honor, while graduate Erica Smith (strategic communications) and junior Mackenzie Myers (elementary education) scored their second career honors. Smith was one of 91 gymnasts to earn the honor with a 4.00 grade point average (GPA). Additionally, three Mountaineer graduates – Dayah Haley (athletic coaching education), Lia Salzano (elementary education) and Maci Sump (athletic coaching education) - capped off their WVU careers with their first award.
Scholastic All-America status is awarded as a result of GPAs of 3.5 or better for the year. In total, 627 gymnasts earned the award for the 2014-15 season.
The NACGC/W is the national association for women’s collegiate gymnastics coaches. The association seeks to actively manage and develop the sport of women’s gymnastics at the collegiate level and works with the NCAA and USA Gymnastics in order to provide the best possible experience for student-athletes.
