ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The West Virginia volleyball team couldn’t overcome George Washington’s hot-hitting offense and fell to the Colonials, 3-0, in the Michigan Invitational at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor on Saturday morning in set scores of 15-25, 12-25 and 18-25.
GWU hit .321 with 38 kills in the three-set match, while WVU registered a .112 attacking percentage on 27 kills. The Colonials also out-blocked the Mountaineers, 8-4.
The loss moves the Mountaineers to 1-1 on the season. They will look to bounce back Saturday evening when they take on host Michigan in a 7:30 p.m. match.
“I was disappointed that we didn’t come out this morning and execute at the level in which we needed to,” said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. “We need to be prepared to play every time we set foot on the court and today we weren’t.”
Morgan Montgomery led the offense once again, recording eight kills and hitting .211 with four digs and a block assist. Mia Swanegan and Caleah Wells each had six kills, with Wells hitting .250. Dzeni Hadzisehovic saw her first action of the season, going for three kills and a block assist.
Brittany Sample and Haley Roe shared setting duties, with Sample posting 15 assists and Roe dishing out eight. Hannah Shreve led the blocking effort with a trio of stops and Gianna Gotterba led the team with nine digs.
The Mountaineers struggled to overcome a slow start in the first set, hitting just .038 for the stanza. GWU took a 12-5 lead on a pair of service aces before Montgomery and Shreve paired for a block that gave WVU a bit of momentum. Swanegan and Bridgett Talia each found the court, but the Colonials kept the 14-9 advantage. Montgomery added a pair of late kills, leading the set with three and hitting .250, but the Colonials used late WVU miscues to cap the set with a 25-15 win.
Set two was much of the same, as GWU jumped out to an 8-3 lead. A GWU ace and a WVU attacking error pushed the Colonials’ lead to six, at 11-5, before a trio of kills by the Mountaineers cut the deficit back down to five at 14-9. The WVU offense stalled, and a pair of blocks by the Colonials combined with an attacking error on the Mountaineers put GWU at set-point with a 24-12 lead. A Colonial ace ended things in a 25-12 win for GWU, who took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Montgomery came out swinging early in set three, putting up three of WVU’s first four points as the Mountaineers took a 4-3 lead. However, the offense stalled and GWU used a 4-0 run to take a 12-7 advantage. Montgomery added two more kills, hitting .667 in the set, and WVU came up with a pair of late blocks, but it wasn’t enough as GWU hit .321 for the set and took the 25-18 win after a block and a kill.
