MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Headed by senior Easton Renwick and graduate assistant Michael Molinari, the Gold team proved victorious in the First Annual Mountaineer Cup, held at The Pines Country Club in Morgantown last week.
The Mountaineers held a draft last Monday to select the teams, with Renwick serving as the Gold team captain and fellow senior Mason Short heading the Blue team. Renwick drafted Max Sear, Cole Hand, Alan Cooke, Jon Ransone and Molinari to join him. Short selected Tristan Nicholls, Avery Schneider, Chris Williams, Tae Wan Lee and coach Sean Covich to comprise the Bleu squad.
Gold took an 8-1 lead in fourball action on the first day of play, with Renwick and Molinari combining to shoot a 64. The duo of Williams and Lee posted the best score of the day for the Blue team, carding a 65.
“It was a good day for our squad,” said Renwick following the first round of action. “We got eight points out of a possible nine. It was pretty tough carrying Mike, but I think we can go out and win a couple of matches and put this thing away early.
However, Short felt his team could make the comeback.
“I think we’re doing well,” he said. “We’re playing hard right now, trying to represent the Blue team as best we can. This is a big competition for us, so we’re just trying to make a big comeback in this game.”
On day two, it was once again the Gold team that prevailed, winning the round 6.5-2.5 to take a 14.5-3.5 lead overall. However, it was Lee and Williams who posted the best score of the day at 64, topping Renwick and Cooke’s 65. All three Gold pairs shot under 70, with the duos of Sean/Molinari and Hand/Ransone shooting 68.
The third day of action was singles matches, and thought the Blue team made progress it was the Gold team who led 11.5-6.5 to take the 2015 Mountaineer Cup with a score of 26-10. Sear fired a 66 for the best round of the day, while Cooke and Renwick each recorded a score of 70.
West Virginia will hold intersquad qualifying rounds over next two weeks in preparation for the season opener. The Mountaineers will embark on their first varsity season September 6-7 when they compete in the Tiger Turning Stone Invitational in Verona, New York.
