August 21, 2015 10:26 AM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons and the Big 12 Conference announced the 2015-16 women’s basketball schedule Friday.
The Mountaineers are slated to play 15 regular season homes and one exhibition at the WVU Coliseum this season. There are 10 teams on West Virginia’s schedule that reached the postseason last year, including seven that made the NCAA Tournament.
“I am anxious to see how our young team will compete in the nation’s strongest league,” said coach Mike Carey. “There is no doubt that the level of competition from top to bottom is the toughest since we’ve joined the league. We look forward to the challenge ahead.”
West Virginia participates in a pair of non-conference tournaments. First, the Mountaineers travel to Spokane, Washington, for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge from November 22-24. WVU plays 2015 NCAA Tournament participant and host Gonzaga (Nov 22), USC (Nov. 23) and Grand Canyon (Nov. 24). The team closes out the four-game tournament with a neutral site matchup against Yale on Sunday, November 29, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
The annual Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic against in-state foe Marshall is set for Sunday, December 13, at the Charleston Civic Center. (Please note that the previous date of Saturday, December 12 released earlier this summer was incorrect).
The Mountaineers’ also play in the Florida Sunshine Classic, which is held on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. WVU opens the two-day tournament against another NCAA Tournament participant, James Madison, on Sunday, December 20. West Virginia plays Big Ten foe Indiana to close out the tournament on Monday, December 21.
For the first time since joining the league in 2012-13, the Mountaineers open Big 12 Conference action at home when Texas visits the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday, December 30. WVU then hits the road for a pair of games at Kansas (Jan. 3) and Kansas State (Jan. 6).
West Virginia welcomes last year’s reigning Big 12 Champion Baylor to the Coliseum on Saturday, January 30. Senior Day is set for Saturday, February 27, when the Mountaineers close out league action at home against Oklahoma State. WVU finishes the regular season at Iowa State on Tuesday, March 1.
The 2016 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship is set for Friday through Monday, March 4-7 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
West Virginia hosts Shepherd on Saturday, October 31, for an exhibition and the team’s annual Haunted Hoops game presented by Coke Zero. The Mountaineers officially tipoff the season on Saturday, November 14, against Delaware State in Morgantown.
Game times and a complete television schedule will be announced at a later date. All dates and times are subject to change for television.
