West Virginia University volleyball coach Reed Sunahara, along with select members of the squad, spoke with the media as part of the Mountaineers’ first media availability of the season on Thursday afternoon.
Senior middle blocker Caleah Wells, junior middle blocker Hannah Shreve and sophomore libero Gianna Gotterba were in attendance at the session.
Sunahara enters his first season as coach of the Mountaineers. He came to Morgantown from Buffalo, where he spent one season at the helm of the Bull after working with USA Volleyball. The Hilo, Hawaii, native previously spent 11 seasons as the head coach at Cincinnati, leading the Bearcats to the NCAA tournament on eight occasions.
Wells is one of two senior returners for WVU this season. The Red Oak, Texas, native averaged 1.70 kills per set, hitting .400 or better in 10 matches as a junior in 2014. Shreve worked her way into the starting lineup as a sophomore after missing the first portion of the season with an injury. She went on to lead the Mountaineers with 1.39 blocks per set, ranking third in the Big 12. Gotterba returns after a stellar freshman year in which she led the Mountaineers with 2.99 digs per set.
West Virginia heads to Charleston on Saturday, where the team will practice and visit the statehouse in addition to other activities.
