MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Five with ties to the West Virginia University rifle team earned top finishes at the 2015 European Shooting Championship, held over the course of the last two weeks at the Shooting Center Gaj Maribor, in Maribor, Slovenia.
Senior Meelis Kiisk, a native of Paide, Estonia, competed in the men’s 50m rifle prone and 50m rifle 3 positions, finishing 46th (619.2) and 49th (1151), respectively. Kiisk advanced to the prone qualification round after shooting 616.5 in the elimination relay.
Classmate Michael Bamsey, a native of Cardiff, Wales, also competed in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions and placed 46th with a score of 1152. Additionally, coach Jon Hammond, an Aberdeen, Scotland, native, finished 24th in the men’s 50m rifle prone with a score of 621.9. He shot 620.9 in the second elimination relay, good enough for 12th place.
On the women’s side, 2015 graduate Ziva Dvorsak, a native of Ljubljana, Slovenia, placed 30th in the 50m rifle 3 positions with a score of 572. Three-time NCAA champion Petra Zublasing, competing for Italy, placed second in the competition with a 451.4 final score. She advanced to the final after finishing eighth in the qualification relay with a 579 mark. Zublasing also placed 15th in the women's 50m rifle prone, shooting 615.4.
The next international competition is the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Gabala World Cup, scheduled for August 6 – 16, in Gabala, Azerbaijani.
