MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team will travel to No. 16 Maryland on Tuesday, April 7, for a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
West Virginia enters the game with an 18-11 record, winning nine of its last 10 games, including taking two-of-three at Kansas State last weekend.
Freshman second baseman Kyle Davis paces the WVU offense, batting .364 with 10 doubles, two home runs and 18 RBIs, while senior third baseman Justin Fox is hitting .319 with eight doubles, one triple, two home runs and 13 RBIs. Senior shortstop Taylor Munden leads the team with seven home runs to go along with a .312 batting average and nine doubles, while sophomore outfielder Shaun Wood has a team-leading 23 RBIs.
Freshman right-hander Shane Ennis (1-0) will get the nod for West Virginia. Ennis has a 0.69 ERA in eight appearances with two starts. He has struck out seven in 13.0 innings and opponents are hitting .167.
As a team, WVU is batting .283 with 93 extra-base hits and 165 runs driven in. The pitching staff has a 3.51 ERA in 258.2 innings with 189 strikeouts.
Maryland holds a 22-7 record and is coming off an impressive three-game sweep of nationally ranked Nebraska last weekend at home. The Terrapins hold a 10-0 record when playing at home this season.
Sophomore infielder Brandon Lowe leads Maryland offensively with a .381 batting average, nine doubles, two triples, seven homers and 24 RBIs. Junior catcher Kevin Martir is hitting .353 with nine doubles, four home runs and 21 RBIs, while sophomore infielder Nick Cieri has a .327 batting average with five doubles, three home runs and 36 RBIs.
The Terrapins are hitting .287 as a team with 56 doubles, 10 triples, 28 home runs and 191 RBIs. The pitching staff holds a 3.64 ERA with 247 strikeouts in 255 innings.
This will be the 62nd meeting between the schools with Maryland holding a 37-23-1 advantage.
