The Mountaineers outshot Pitt 15-3 on Friday, while also holding an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
“It was good to play an ACC team. I’m so excited that a freshman impacted and had the game-winner,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We just had so many chances and it was nice to be able to finish and convert on the one. I’m so excited for Heather to finally find the back of the net”
Kaleiohi, a San Diego, California, native, got the Mountaineers on the board in the 32nd minute. Kaleiohi cut inside her defender and fired a shot from just outside the box into the far corner of the net.
The Mountaineers controlled possession for most of the match. Hannah Steadman and Michelle Newhouse teamed up for the shutout of the Panthers. Steadman started in net and played the first 45 minutes, while Newhouse subbed in at half and posted a scoreless second frame.
Kailey Utley almost broke the scoreless tie in the 20th minute when she hit the post inside the six after receiving a through ball in box from Amanda Hill.
Pitt’s best scoring chance of the first half came in the 29th minute. Taylor Pryce hit the cross bar and Roosa Arva’s rebound was saved by Steadman.
West Virginia’s best chance of the second half came off the foot of Maggie Bedillion who shot just wide of post from the edge of box in the 50th minute.
The Panthers almost got on the board in the 77th on a near breakaway. Newhouse came off her line and made a sliding safe to preserve the shutout.
The Mountaineers continue their spring schedule when they host Maryland on Sunday, April 12, at 1 p.m.
