MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team completed day one of the two-day Knecht Cup Regatta in West Windsor Township, New Jersey. Two crews advanced to the semi-finals on Sunday, April 12 after its heats on Mercer Lake, earlier today.
“We saw very positive signs from our team today. Despite today’s weather delay and challenging racing conditions, our varsity eights were able to stay relaxed and keep the focus internal as we like to say,” said coach Jimmy King. “Now, the challenge before them is to build upon today’s results in tomorrow’s semis and finals.”
In the first race of the day for the Mountaineers, the Women’s Varsity Four posted a time of 7:58.35, trailing Villanova’s boat by seven seconds for fifth place in heat one.
In the First Varsity Eight, West Virginia tallied a time 6:47.73 to place second in heat two, just two seconds shy of Big 12 foe Kansas’ boat. The First Varsity Eight crew advances to the semifinals tomorrow for a chance to compete in one of two finals. West Virginia’s race begins at 11:30 a.m. as it competes against Holy Cross, Alabama, Fordham, Drexel, Bucknell and UCF.
In the Second Varsity Eight event, the Mountaineers recorded a time of 6:56.07 to place third in heat four. WVU advances to the semifinals tomorrow for a chance to compete in one of two finals. West Virginia’s race starts at 11:05 a.m., as it races against Fordham, Alabama, Bucknell, UFC and ODU.
Due to inclement weather, the Women’s Third Varsity Eight race was delayed until Sunday, April 12, at 11 a.m.
