MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team travels to West Windsor, New Jersey, to compete at the Knecht Cup Regatta on Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12, on Mercer Lake.
“By this weekend our full team will have been on the water for three weeks. While we of course think about the racing, we’re more focused on the day-to-day aspect as we work on our technical elements. We want to make sure that we’re getting in the necessary mileage as well,” said coach Jimmy King. “On top of that, we’re continually sorting through various line-up combinations, so we have plenty to think about at each training session.”
The two-day event will feature crews from 70 different schools across the country, competing in 34 events. Competition from Mercer Lake begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday. The first West Virginia crew is set to race in the First Varsity Four, with heats starting at 7:42 a.m.
The Mountaineers have boats competing in the Women’s Varsity Four, Women’s First Varsity Eight, Women’s Second Varsity Eight and the Women’s Third Varsity Eight.
This weekend’s competition will be the third event of the spring for West Virginia. Last week, the Mountaineers competed in a dual contest against Indiana on Lake Lemon in Bloomington, Indiana. No official results were kept, but both teams competed in a number of different pieces throughout the day.
“Including West Virginia, four of the eight Big 12 rowing members will compete at this weekend’s regatta, allowing us all to gauge our mid-season speeds relative to one another.”
