Tennis Falls at Home to Cornell

“We had a solid day of doubles play today, and we will look at taking our doubles play into tomorrow’s match,” said coach Miha Lisac. “There are things we can learn from today’s match and get better at.”
The Mountaineers jumped out to an early advantage after winning the doubles point. The No. 2 doubles team of Ikttesh Chahal and Habiba Shaker defeated Cornell’s Dena Tanenbaum and Priyanka Shah, 6-4. The West Virginia No. 3 doubles team of Kaja Mrgole and Yvon Martinez was also victorious, defeating the Big Red’s Lizzie Stewart and Jane Stewart, 6-4.
In singles action, Cornell took wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The Big Red’s Tanenbaum defeated WVU’s Mrgole, 6-0, 6-2. Alexandra D’Ascenzo defeated Hailey Barrett, 6-1, 6-0, and Marika Cusick defeated Chahal, 6-1, 6-2.
Shaker got the Mountaineers on the board at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Lizzie Stewart. At No. 5 singles, Carolina Lewis also recorded a win, taking down Priyanka Shah, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Cornell’s Jan Stewart narrowly defeated Martinez 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6 singles to secure the win for the visitors.
The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow morning with a home match against Marshall scheduled for 9 a.m. at Ridgeview Raquet Club.
