MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s swimming team and the WVU men’s and women’s diving teams will both be in action this weekend at separate competitions.
The men’s and women’s diving teams will travel to Buffalo, New York, for the 2015 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships from March 9-11, while select members of the men’s swimming team will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the OSU Last Chance meet on Sunday, March 8.
“They all appear relaxed and ready to compete. With the new qualification standards for diving, all of our divers have an excellent chance to do very well this week,” said diving coach Michael Grapner.
Men’s diver Alex Obendorf earned All-Big 12 First Team honors in the 3-meter and platform diving events last weekend at the Big 12 Championship. Fellow men’s diver Mike Proietto was named to the All-Big 12 First Team for his efforts on the 1-meter board.
For the women, Lindsay Schmidt led the way, setting a school record of 322.60 on the 3-meter board to earn All-Big 12 First Team distinctions.
“This week, the divers had two very promising practices, and I feel great about what’s to come,” Grapner said. “At this point, it’s no longer up to me. It’s up to them to put it all together and make it happen. They have to want it more than me. I know each of these divers, both guys and girls, have what it takes to compete at the NCAA Championships.”
Each member of the men’s diving team will be looking for a top-six finish in their respective events to qualify for the NCAA Championships, while each member of the women’s team will be searching for a top-seven result for a qualification.
The men’s swimming competitors this weekend will be swimming for a specific time in their respective events to qualify for the NCAA Championships. A full list of qualifiers will be released by the NCAA on Wednesday, March 11.
The Last Chance Meet’s start time is still listed as TBA for Sunday, while the action at the Zone A Championships will begin on March 9 at noon.
