MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Facing inclement weather conditions, the West Virginia University rowing team completed a series of morning races on Saturday in Washington, D.C. on the Potomac River.
The Mountaineers earned a first-place finish, a pair of third-place finishes and a runner-up finish behind Georgetown and North Carolina with their four crews at the event.
“The racing effort by all of our crews was quite good today. Our timing was a bit off and the bladework was sloppy in the blustery conditions, but that’s not surprising due to our limited water time,” said coach Jimmy King. “Thanks to Georgetown and UNC for allowing WVU to compete as a guest in their annual cup race.”
A highlight from the morning for the Mountaineers was the first-place finish by the First Varsity 4+ crew. Marika Hoskins, Lillian Westerman, Jacqueline Spiropoulos, Kimberlie May and coxswain Emily Deming crossed the line only four seconds ahead of North Carolina’s boat.
Early on, the Varsity Four struggled with the water current and windy weather conditions. The crew settled into a rhythm around the 700 mark, and surpassed Georgetown at the 1,000 mark as they lined up with North Carolina’s boat. The Mountaineers then took control of the race, and entered the last 500 meters with one last move to gain momentum on the Tar Heels to secure the victory.
“I was very pleased on how the four raced this morning, taking home our first win of the 2015 season. That boat had a solid week of training in Lake Lure which helped set them up for success today,” said assistant coach Stacey Van Order. “They were confident and resilient while racing in adverse conditions. I look forward to seeing their progress throughout the rest of the season.”
The Mountaineers return to the water next weekend, as the team travels to Bloomington, Indiana, for a race against the Hoosiers on Saturday, April 4th.
