MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team opens its 2015 spring slate in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, March 28 for a race against Georgetown and North Carolina on the Potomac River. The race is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.
“We’re all very excited to finally race. Although, we’ve been on the water for less than two weeks, we’re eager to put our hard winter’s work to the test,” said coach Jimmy King.
WVU has not competed since Nov. 7, as the novice squad scrimmaged against Duquesne on the Monongahela River. The Mountaineers also raced in two regattas during the 2014 fall season.
At the Head of the Ohio, the Mountaineers posted three Top-10 finishes in the Women’s Open 8+ event, earning a silver medal on Oct 4. At the Head of the Occoquan, the novice squad posted two top-five finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+ event, earning a silver and bronze medal on Nov. 1.
On Saturday, the teams will compete in a Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and a Third Varsity 8+ race.
The crews will boat from Thompson Boat Center in Washington, D.C., and spectators can view the race from the Georgetown Waterfront Park as well as along the boardwalk of the Washington Harbour.
“North Carolina has already raced twice, and this is the first race of the season for Georgetown and West Virginia. We’re all relative unknowns to one another at this time, but UNC will certainly be the most race-ready of the three,” King explained.
