MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - For his efforts at the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis this past weekend, freshman wrestler Zeke Moisey has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week.
“I’m extremely proud of Zeke and his performance this weekend,” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “He represented West Virginia University and the Mountaineer wrestling program with guts and honor. We have a bright future with an extremely motivated coaching staff, support staff, administration and wrestlers.”
After entering the tournament unseeded at 125 pounds, the freshman upset the No. 15 seed Chasen Tolbert (UVU), No. 2 seed Nahshon Garrett (Cornell) and No. 7 seed Eddie Klimara (Oklahoma State) to become WVU’s first All-American since 2007. He then pinned No. 6 seed Thomas Gilman of Iowa in 52 seconds in the semifinals to earn a spot in the finals, becoming the first Mountaineer since Greg Jones in 2005 and the first unseeded wrestler since 2003 to do so. Moisey fought a hard battle but dropped a 9-5 decision to No. 4 Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State to cap his tremendous season as the NCAA national runner-up at 125 pounds.

This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia return to action and opens its outdoor season this weekend at the UNF Spring Break from March 27-28 in Jacksonville, Florida ... competition will begin at 9 a.m. each day this weekend.

Notes & Quotes: WVU competed at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in its most recent competition ... Brianna Kerekes and Amy Cashin each earned spots on the podium in the 1,000-meter finals ... Kerekes raced to a fifth-place finish in the conference in 2:49.99, while Cashin placed eighth in 2:50.99 ... Kelly Williams crossed the line in seventh place overall in 4:51.12 in the one mile ... freshman Shamoya McNeil earned a spot on the podium in the triple jump ... McNeil jumped 12.06 meters to place eighth in the league.
This Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia plays Hampton in the second round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament on Tuesday, March 24 at 7 p.m. inside the Coliseum ... the winner of Tuesday’s contest will take on the winner of Richmond/Duquesne in the third round March 25-27. A date, campus site and time will be determined late Tuesday evening. Tickets to Tuesday’s contest are $7 for adults and $4 for children ... groups can purchase tickets for $4, if purchased in advanced ... Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia reeled off its highest offensive output since December with an 84-61 win over Buffalo in the opening round of the WNIT last Thursday.

Notes & Quotes: Senior Tim Squires and junior Andrew Marsh qualified for the championships after meeting a specific time standard in their respective events ... Squires will be competing at the NCAA Championships for the second straight season while Marsh is making his first appearance in the event ... Squires will compete in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles while Marsh will participate in the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard freestyle ... the action will get underway each day with a morning session at noon, ET, and an evening session at 8 p.m., ET.

Last Week in Wrestling: Four Mountaineers represented West Virginia at the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Zeke Moisey was the “Cinderella Story” of the tournament, going from an unseeded, almost-redshirt freshman to a true freshman national runner-up at 125 pounds. No. 16 seed Michael Morales defeated Michigan’s George Fisher (Dec. 8-4) in the first round before falling to No. 1 Logan Stieber of Ohio State in the second. He rebounded with a 20-second pin of Northwestern’s Jameston Oster in the second round of consolations before a 6-4 loss to Boise State’s Geo Martinez eliminated him from competition. Jake A. Smith suffered a suffered a 3-1 setback to No. 15 Aaron Studebaker of Nebraska in the first round before bouncing back with a 3-3 tiebreaker win on riding time over Virginia’s Zach Nye and an 8-3 decision over Jeffrey Koepke of Illinois in wrestlebacks. A 3-1 loss to Penn’s Canaan Bethea in sudden victory eliminated him from competition. Bubba Scheffel also repped the Mountaineers, facing No. 2 Max Thomusseit of Pitt in the first round.
Notes and Quotes: The Mountaineers finished in 20th place at the 2015 NCAA Championships, marking their first top-25 finish since 2005 and the 15th top-25 finish in program history. True freshman Zeke Moisey upset four seeded opponents on his way to the championship finals at 125 pounds, where he lost to No. 4 Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State. Moisey became the 30th WVU wrestler in school history to earn All-America honors, and became the first since Brandon Rader in 2007 to do so. Moisey was also the first unseeded wrestler to make the national finals since 2003, and was the first Mountaineer to advance to the finals since Greg Jones in 2005.
This Week in Gymnastics: The NCAA will announce the pairings and seeds for the six 2015 NCAA Regional Championships, including the Morgantown Regional Championships, with a streamed selection show on NCAA.com on Monday, March 23, at 3 p.m.
Last Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers (14-9-1, 1-1-1) scored 195.025 and finished a program-best second at the 2015 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship on March 21, at Oklahoma’s Lloyd Noble Center … the No. 1 Sooners finished first (197.875) and Iowa State placed third (194.775) … senior Dayah Haley finished second in the all-around with a 38.95 mark, earning her All-Big 12 Championship Team honors … sophomore Alexa Goldberg paced on bars and finished sixth with a 9.825 … freshman Jordan Gillette finished a team-best seventh on beam with a 9.775 … Haley anchored the floor lineup with a 9.85 score, the fifth-best mark awarded, and finished eighth … junior Jaida Lawrence placed fourth on vault with a 9.85.
