WACO, Texas – The West Virginia University baseball team avoided a series sweep as it defeated Baylor, 8-2, on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

"It's not rocket science. If you pitch well, play good defense and get timely hits then you win games, and that's exactly what we did," coach Randy Mazey said. "That was a good baseball game."

Sophomore right-hander Chad Donato (3-3) pitched in another quality start, taking the victory in eight innings of work. He allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

"I think he has only walked one guy this whole season and that's what makes him good," Mazey said. "He attacks the strike zone, he's not afraid of anybody and he can keep you off balance with three different pitches."

The Mountaineers (10-10 overall, 2-4 Big 12) scored eight runs on 11 hits and the Bears (9-14, 2-4 Big 12) had two runs on five hits. Each team committed one error.

Senior third baseman Justin Fox, senior left fielder Brad Johnson and freshman second baseman Kyle Davis had two hits apiece with Davis driving in three runs.

Senior shortstop Taylor Munden and Fox hit back-to-back singles to lead off the game in the top of the first and Munden gave WVU a 1-0 lead as he scored on a double to right center field by Johnson.

Sophomore catcher Ray Guerrini made it 4-0 in the top of the fourth with his second home run of the season, a three-run blast over the left field fence. It was the first home run of the series by either team.

Baylor cut the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Duncan Wendel led off with a double to left center field, advanced to third on a balk and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Mitch Price.

West Virginia added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, extending the lead to 6-1. Davis and junior center fielder KC Huth each had RBI singles to center field to drive in one run apiece.

Baylor’s Kameron Esthay doubled down the right field line to lead off the bottom of the seventh and made the score 6-2 as he came around to score on a single to left field by Matt Menard.

Davis finished the scoring with a two-out, two-run single to center field in the top of the ninth to extend the Mountaineer advantage to 8-2.

Baylor right-hander Drew Tolson (0-5) took the loss after giving up six runs, five earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks in 5.1 innings. Menard finished with two hits to lead the Bears offensively.

West Virginia will stay in Texas for a pair of midweek games at Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday, March 24 and at UT Arlington on Wednesday, March 25. Both games will begin at 3 p.m. ET.

The game can be heard on the affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG College with Lark Smith on the call.
