Tennis Tallies Second Straight Win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team improved their overall record to 2-1, as they defeated the Buffalo Bulls, 5-2, at the Miller Tennis Center, Friday afternoon.
“We played steady throughout the matches and stuck with our game. We found ourselves in a couple of battles out there today, but we kept focused and closed out the matches with a win. Overall, we held our ground and played well today,” said second-year coach Miha Lisac.
WVU clinched the doubles point early on, as sophomore Kaja Mrgole and senior Ikttesh Chahal defeated Buffalo’s Dayana Agasieva and Margarita Kotok with a score of 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. In the No. 3 spot, freshmen duo Habiba Shaker and Yvon Martinez bested Tanja Stojanovska and Doris Aleksovska in a tiebreak (7-6 (1)).
In singles action, the Mountaineers claimed four matches over the Bulls, led by Chahal at the No. 3 spot, as she defeated Dayana Agasieva with a score of 0-6, 6-4, 7-5. Shaker battled the Bulls in three sets at the No. 4 spot, as she bested Laura Holterbosch with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-4.

The Mountaineers will remain in New York and travel to Niagara on Saturday, Feb. 6, to take on the Purple Eagles. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET.
