Baseball Loses Early Lead Against Kent State

CONWAY, S.C. – Despite holding an early lead, the West Virginia University baseball team fell 5-2 to Kent State on Friday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina.
West Virginia (3-4) finished with two runs on six hits and no errors, while Kent State (2-4) scored five runs on 12 hits with one error.
Senior left fielder Brad Johnson finished his afternoon with three hits and two RBIs to lead the Mountaineers at the plate.
Senior shortstop Taylor Munden reached base to lead off the game for the fourth-consecutive game with a single. After a walk to senior third baseman Justin Fox, Johnson ripped a double to the left center field wall, scoring both runners to open the scoring at 2-0.
Kent State cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first with a Zarley Zalewski bloop double down the left field line, scoring Luke Burch from second base.
The Golden Flashes took a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run single to center field by Zach Beckner.
Kent State added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and bottom of the seventh on a pair of sacrifice flies by Jeff Revesz and Sawyer Polen, respectively.
Freshman right-hander BJ Myers (0-1) took the loss for the Mountaineers, giving up four runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and one walk in 6.0 innings.
Nick Jensen-Clagg (2-1) picked up the win for Kent State, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 6.0 innings. Zach Willeman recorded the final two outs for the save.
West Virginia returns to action at 4 p.m. this afternoon with a game against Coastal Carolina. Junior right-handed pitcher Ross Vance (1-1) will get the start for the Mountaineers. Links to live video, live audio and live stats are available on WVUsports.com.
