MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed the first day of competition of the 2015 Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships earlier tonight at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
After one night of competition, the men and women each sit in third place overall, respectively.
“The women got off to a great start with some really good relay swims,” said coach Vic Riggs. “It sets us up for a strong day tomorrow morning. It is going to be a tight team race, which will be exciting.”
To kick off the championships, in the women’s 200-yard medley relay, the Mountaineer team of Courtney Miller, Jenelle Zee, Celia Martinez and Jaimee Gillmore raced to a third-place finish in 1:41.45.
The women’s 800-yard freestyle relay team of Amelie Currat, Martinez, Julie Ogden and Emma Skelley finished in fourth place, touching the wall in 7:23.73.
“It was a tough day for our men,” Riggs said. “They swam well but made two huge mistakes that cost us a lot of points. We’ll now see what kind of character this team has.”
The men’s 1-meter diving event saw two of the three Mountaineer participants post personal-best scores.
Freshman Michael Proietto had a career day, placing third overall on the 1-meter board with a career-best score of 304.45. Freshman Logan McHenry also hit a career-best score, finishing fifth overall with a 285.80 mark. Freshman Markus Perry followed close behind in sixth overall with a career-best 263.70.
“The three boys had great prelim meets which set themselves up for a positive final meet,” said diving coach Michael Grapner. “They were excited and carried themselves with maturity and confidence. It came down to the last dive for Mike. He knew he had to make his last dive count, and he certainly did. I’m very proud of all the boys tonight, and I’m looking forward to having all four guys compete on Friday for the men’s 3-meter.”
The Mountaineers will return to action for day two of the Big 12 Championships tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. ET. The four-day championships will run through the weekend and conclude with the Saturday night finals session scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
