In anticipation of its first varsity season in three decades, the West Virginia University men’s golf team has been in the community making friends – and fans. Most recently, the Mountaineers paid a visit to the WVU Children’s Hospital in Morgantown.
Coach Sean Covich and his squad spent an afternoon interacting with patients of all ages while at the hospital. The squad’s first stop was the activity room, where they played air hockey and foosball with a young boy named Stephen. Mason Short teamed with Stephen to face his classmates, who had come to visit home for the afternoon. Unfortunately, the duo lost on an own goal. Teammate Easton Renwick quickly stepped in to partner with Stephen, vowing redemption for his new friend. Of course, they won.
“We took all five of our guys, plus myself and my wife,” said Covich. We just spent the afternoon visiting with the kids and kind of understanding their situation. There were kids what were a few months old, and there kids that were teenagers and everywhere in between with various different reasons that they were in there.”
Following their foosball games, the Mountaineers toured the floor stopping in to hello to patients and hand out foam fingers, bracelets and mini footballs. The team spent a few minutes visiting a young boy named Javon, who was in the hospital recovering from an accident. A youth wrestler, the team tried their best to turn him into a golf fan.
The squad then spent a few minutes chatting with a young woman named Leah who was in the hospital receiving treatment. They also stopped in to visit a one-year-old named Henry, who later donned a WVU baseball cap.
“She had a great outlook on life and was really upbeat,” said Renwick. “It was great to spend some time with her.”
The Mountaineers are set to perform numerous community service activities over the coming months, as Covich sees it as in integral part of the team.
“Coming to West Virginia and seeing how much the community loves West Virginia sports, it’s nice to be able to give back to the community in a way that we did this past week was really great,” said Renwick. “One of our team goals is to get out into the community at least once a month.”
Covich echoed his sentiments.
“It’s really just about giving back. The opportunities we’ve been given, to start the program here – we want to be a blessing to the rest of our community.”
