FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior guard Bria Holmes paced West Virginia University women’s basketball with 24 points in the Mountaineers’ 73-63 loss at TCU on Tuesday evening inside the University Recreation Center.
The two squads remained close in the first eight minutes of the first half before TCU (16-11, 8-8 Big 12) used a 12-0 run to maintain a double-digit lead at the break. WVU (16-12, 6-10) cut the game to five points in the second half before another 12-4 Horned Frogs run helped the squad clinch their 13th victory at home.
“Give TCU credit,” said coach Mike Carey. “They hurt us in dribble-penetration and we didn’t make the shots we needed to.”
Holmes, an All-America candidate, finished the night with 24 points and four steals. Her 31 field goal attempts broke a previous school record set by Cathy Parson in 1981. The attempts tied Jaynetta Saunders for ninth-most in Big 12 history.
Teana Muldrow and Bre McDonald also reached double-figures with 11 points each. For the second consecutive game, Muldrow drained a team-best three triples. Averee Fields led the Mountaineers with seven rebounds.
Linda Stepney moved up in the record book with her team-leading five assists. Her 412 assists at WVU are now 10th all-time. Tuesday also marked Stepney’s 121st career start, tying Ashley Powell (’09) for the third-most by a Mountaineer.
For the game, TCU shot 48 percent (24-of-50) from the field. WVU was limited to 32.5 percent shooting (25-of-77) for the contest. The Mountaineers forced 17 TCU turnovers and turned those into 19 points. The Horned Frogs narrowly won the rebound column, 41-39, but WVU outmanned TCU 20-to-8 in offensive boards. TCU finished with 17-of-18 makes from the free throw line and eight made three-pointers.
Both teams kept it close early in the contest. Stepney exited early in the first half due to a pair of quick fouls. TCU stretched its lead to seven, 19-12, after a triple from Natalie Ventress.
The Horned Frogs stretched their run to 12-0 before Bria Holmes scored a layup to snap the Mountaineers’ six-minute scoring skid. WVU cut the game to single digits late, but TCU used a 6-2 run to hold a 39-27 halftime lead.
Offensively, WVU was held to 29.7 percent (11-of-37), while TCU connected on 52 percent (13-of-25). The Horned Frogs outrebounded West Virginia 22-17. Bria Holmes had 10 of WVU’s 22 points, while Natalie Ventress had nine for the Horned Frogs.
With Stepney inserted back in the lineup, West Virginia came out firing and whittled the Horned Frogs’ lead to 44-38 with under 16 minutes to play. A triple by Muldrow cut the game to five with 14 minutes left.
TCU pushed their lead to double-figures for good with a 12-4 run. West Virginia pulled within 13 under five minutes to play, but couldn’t crack the double-digit lead. Zahna Medley led TCU with 19 points, following by Ventress with 15.
West Virginia returns to action on Sunday, March 1 against Texas at 1 p.m. ET. The game is Senior Day and also $1 admission courtesy of United Bank. Sunday’s contest is nationally televised on ESPN2.
