West Virginia (15-10, 5-8 Big 12) is coming off a 79-51 loss at No. 3-ranked Baylor. The WVU Coliseum has been great to the Mountaineers this season, as West Virginia holds a 12-2 mark at home. Since January 21, WVU has won four consecutive games in Morgantown.
“I am all about competing,” noted coach Mike Carey. “I am about going for the win. I am all about being aggressive offensively and defensively. If we can do that, we’ll be in all five of these games.”
Bria Holmes, an All-America candidate, continues to lead the Mountaineers with 19.8 points per game. Her point average is second in the Big 12. Holmes is four points away from reaching her 500th point of the season, which will be 18th time that feat has happened in school history.
WVU continues to lead the league and sit fifth nationally with 6.7 blocks per game. Lanay Montgomery has deflected 3.6 blocks per game, which leads the Big 12. Montgomery is pulling in 7.8 rebounds per game to lead WVU.
Oklahoma State (16-8, 6-7 Big 12) and West Virginia meet for the eighth time on Wednesday. WVU owns a 5-2 mark in the all-time series and have won the last three games.
Earlier this year, West Virginia collected a 61-49 win over the then-ranked No. 21/20 Cowgirls in Stillwater. Bre McDonald notched a game-high 16 points, while Linda Stepney contributed with a season-high 15.
OSU has won three out of its last four games, including three straight. During the three-game win streak, Oklahoma State has knocked off Kansas, Texas and Iowa State. The Cowgirls are the Big 12’s top defense, giving up just 54.9 points per game. Their 3-point defense of 27.9 percent is also a league-best.
“They are playing very, especially defensively,” said Carey. “They are starting to hit shots. Anytime you play good defense and start hitting shots, you’re going to start winning some games.”
Guard Brittney Martin leads Oklahoma State with 12.8 points and 8.3 rebounds. Her 2.9 steals per game is second in the Big 12. Liz Donohoe (11.8), Roshunda Johnson (11.6) and LaShawn Jones (10.4) are also double-digit scorers for the Cowgirls.
