WACO, Texas – West Virginia women’s basketball was unable to find a rhythm in a 79-51 loss to No. 3-ranked Baylor on Sunday afternoon at the Ferrell Center.
The Lady Bears (24-1, 13-0 Big 12) opened the contest on a 15-2 run. WVU (15-10, 5-8) pulled within single digits halfway through the first half, but BU would take a 19-point lead at halftime. West Virginia’s offense started off slow in the second half and Baylor capitalized to pick up its 23rd consecutive win.
Bria Holmes reached double figures for the 27th time in her last 28 games with 15 points on Sunday. Redshirt freshman Teana Muldrow tallied double-figures for the seventh time this season, scoring a team-high 16 points. Linda Stepney had a team-best five assists in the loss.
“They are playing very well right now,” said coach Mike Carey. “We were passive. That’s something we talked about, being aggressive offensively and defensively. We weren’t focused. I thought some people for us played hard. We couldn’t score. They just pounded us in the paint.”
Overall, WVU shot 31.0 percent (18-of-58) from the field as Baylor connected on 53.8 percent (35-of-65). The Lady Bears dominated inside, 50-21, holding WVU to its lowest rebound total since 2011.
Baylor jumped out early, making 7-of-9 buckets and opening a 15-2 advantage. Jessica Morton’s jumper at 10:37 cut the game to single digits.
The Lady Bears continued their strong offensive performance, using a 19-6 run to take a commanding lead. Baylor held a 47-28 advantage at the break, becoming the first opponent to score 47 points on WVU in the first half this season.
WVU shot just 38.2 percent (13-of-34) from the field, while Baylor knocked down 60 percent (21-of-35). BU won the rebound margin, 28-7. Holmes paced West Virginia with eight points, while Davis and Cohen had eight for Baylor.
A slow second half helped the Lady Bears push the game to 34 in the second half. West Virginia fought back to cut the game to 20 midway through. Nina Davis lead Baylor with 22 points, while Niya Johnson had 13 of BU’s 30 assists.
West Virginia returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18 against Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET in Morgantown.
