WVU Successful at 2015 Winter Airgun Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Garrett Spurgeon and freshman Ginny Thrasher of the No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team earned top-10 finishes at the USA Shooting Winter Airgun Championships, held today at the Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Spurgeon shot a three-day relay total of 1885.6 in the 10m men’s air rifle open competition, while Thrasher shot a 1248.9 in the 10m women’s air rifle open competition.
Spurgeon shot a 622.3 mark today to place third overall in the 10m men’s air rifle open competition. He finished second in the final and earned seven additional points for his finish. Thrasher shot a 417.1 mark to place fourth overall in the 10m women’s air rifle open competition. She placed fifth in the final and earned five additional points for her finish.
Over the course of three days, Spurgeon and Thrasher placed first and sixth overall in their respected competitions to advance to the second part of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Air Rifle Team trials, set for next June.
“Garrett had an awesome weekend,” said coach Jon Hammond. “To finish on top out of everyone in the country is a great achievement. He was really consistent all week. He made all the finals, and that made all the difference.
“Ginny also shot very well, and then today, she had her best performance of the week and found herself in the top 10. I know she was really pleased with that.”
Sophomore Elizabeth Gratz shot a 410.2 mark in the 10m women’s air rifle open competition today and pushed her three-day total of 1240.1.
Junior Jean-Pierre Lucas qualified for today’s final with a 620.6 score. He placed sixth and earned three additional points, putting his three-day total at 1857.9.
Senior Patrick Sunderman just missed today’s final with a 619.1 mark. He finished with a three-day total of 1857.6.
Freshman Will Anti shot a 618.6 mark to place fifth overall in the 10m men’s air rifle junior division, earning two additional points for his finish. Anti shot a three-day total of 1846.3 in the junior competition
Seniors Meelis Kissk and Michael Bamsey shot as visitors this weekend and earned a three-day totals of 1865.5 and 1841.6, respectively, in the 10m air rifle men’s open relay. Kiisk shot 620.5 today, and Bamsey totaled 610.3.
Of note, graduate assistant Daniel Hermsmeier finished with a three-day score of 1849.8, shooting 618.5 in today’s competition.
“Overall, the team had really good performances,” Hammond stated. “Both Patrick and J.P. were really close to the top 10 as well. I think this experience provides us with a lot of things to build off of.”
