MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Garrett Spurgeon of the No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team finished first overall on the second day of competition at the USA Shooting Winter Airgun Championships, held today at the Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
“Garrett had a good day overall, and I think everyone improved as a whole,” said coach Jon Hammond. “Mike (Michael Bamsey) and Meelis (Kiisk) also shot very well today, and Ginny (Thrasher) continues to show improvement every day. I’m looking forward to the final day of competition tomorrow.”
Spurgeon was the only Mountaineer that advanced to the open finals, as he placed second in the 10m air rifle men’s open competition, shooting 623.3 in the open relay and 207.4 in the final, earning seven additional points for his finish. Of note, Spurgeon’s relay score was good enough for a first-place overall finish.
Seniors Michael Bamsey and Meelis Kissk shot as visitors and rounded out the top 10 in the 10m air rifle men’s open relay, shooting 622.5 and 620.3, respectively.
Senior Patrick Sunderman shot a 618.8 mark in the 10m air rifle men’s open relay and finished 14th overall, followed by junior Jean-Pierre Lucas with a score of 617.7. Lucas tied for 18th place overall with Matthew Rawlings.
In the 10m air rifle junior’s competition, freshman Will Anti placed 11th overall, shooting a 612.5 mark.
Sophomore Elizabeth Gratz shot a 411.9 showing in the 10m air rifle women’s open relay, and tied for 17th place overall. Freshman Ginny Thrasher shot a 414.0 mark in the open relay and a 122.6 mark in the junior finals to place sixth in the division, earning three additional points for her finish.
Of note, graduate assistant Daniel Hermsmeier shot 613.0 and finished 32nd overall.
The Mountaineers return to the range Sunday for the final day of competition. The annual tournament is serving as one of two trials for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Air Rifle Team.
